Why Our Work is Important
The transistion after high school for students with autism is a critical time in their development as an adult. Once the student exits high school, they loose access to all of the supports that were provided in their Individual Educaction Plan (IEP).
It is important that supports for teens and young adults are provided by someone other than the individual's primary caregiver. The goal for the individual is to make meaningful connections to a community of individuals outside of the family they've known growing up. This is difficult if the support provider is the individual's parent or legal guardian.
Providing a structure to the individual's day and developing goals and action plans on what they wish to accomplish in their life is essential on their path to adulthood. Below are the ways Spectrum Help Coaching Services provides can help to make sure this happens.
Connections to Communities
Friendships are important, but being connected to a community of people that accept you for who you for being who you are is how friendships are formed. The best way to find your community is through the individuals interests and passions.
In high school, it's much easier to find a community through clubs and extra-curricular activities. Post high school, these need to be sought out. Meet-up (www.meetup.com) is a great resource to find a future community of like-minded people. Other places are local faith-based organizations and the local YMCA.
If you are a young adult with autism needing help in locating your community or a parent of a young adult on the autism spectrum that needs help helping your child, click on the 'Contact Me' tab at the bottom of the page to connect.
